Rain & Trees

A forest‑built life with modern tools, muddy boots, and a hobbit’s love of cozy corners.

We’re Carsten and Artemis, and Rain and Trees is our ongoing journey of building a life in the rainy forests of the Pacific Northwest. On our 16‑acre property (four acres to shape into home and garden, and twelve acres left wild) we’re creating a place that blends modern living with a touch of fantasy. Alongside our main house, you may eventually find a hobbit hole or two tucked into the landscape.

For Carsten, this project is a return to his roots. He grew up in a nearby rural forest, and the memories of that childhood home have stayed with him ever since. Building here is the realization of a long‑held dream to come back to the woods and craft a home of his own.

For Artemis, this is a new chapter. A lifelong city girl who moved to Washington in 2020, she has always felt drawn to nature and imagined one day building a cabin in the woods. Now, that dream is becoming real, one beam, board, and rainy day at a time.

Together, we’re creating the life we’ve both imagined. Rain and Trees is where we document the process through blogs and videos: the progress and setbacks, the lessons learned, the inspiration behind our designs, and the practical details of building a home in the forest. We invite you to follow along, learn with us, and maybe gather ideas for your own adventure.
